Chapter 1The Gateway
On This Edition · 編例
This volume sets the complete eighty-one chapters of the Tao Te Ching in parallel: the Classical Chinese of the received Wang Bi recension (2,300 years old, cross-checked against the Mawangdui silk manuscripts), and a deliberately loose American localization rendered in the idiom of the present century. It is a vibe, not a verdict — a way in, not the last word.
The translation keeps the spine of each chapter — non-forcing, reversal, softness, the suspicion of status — while swapping the imagery for the register of feeds, clout, flexing, and logging off. Read both columns. Argue with both.
